Kawau
Island
Kawau Island with its historical Mansion House must be the jewel in the
crown of the Hauraki Gulf.
A pleasant 30 minutes ferry ride from Sandspit Wharf will take you to
this most magical island. Kawau Island does not have a large permanent
population but is however a very popular day trip or vacation destination
for Auckland's boaties.
The island abounds with bush walks, attractive bays and inlets, the most
notable is mansion house bay. Here in 1862 an early New Zealand governor,
George Grey built the famous and majestic mansion house, set in beautiful
park like grounds with many rare and exotic trees. The area is now a national
treasure and proudly owned by the people of Auckland.
Vineyards
25 minutes drive north of Orewa you enter Matakana wine country, that
stretches along meandering river valleys and coastline, from Puhoi in
the south, to Pakiri in the north. The iron rich clay soils and maritime
climate provide a perfect environment for many delightful vineyards and
wineries. Most are family operated and are the result of many generations
of wine making skills.
The wine makers have a true passion for their craft, producing diverse
and often unique, award winning wines. Many vineyards include tasting
and restaurant facilities where you may relax, soak up the vista of rolling
farm hills and sample wines or superb cuisine.
